“The Freighter Paintings can be thought of as metaphorical portraits in which I use ships to symbolize strength, the power of will, and a war weary vulnerability - all at the same time. I hope they bring-to-mind the metaphorical journey that constitutes each individual lifetime, likening it to the passages of a ship on the ocean.
The Towers Series is inspired by the numerous industrial sites we have seen by boat. These man-made structures with an implied human presence, mysterious function, and reference to the foibles of industry, speak to me on several levels. I am currently exploring how linear marks linear structures can “hold their own” and gain power over the surrounding painted background.”

“At the onset of the pandemic, we all felt a sense of fear – some felt a fear of State surveillance as was happening in China. The first Towers I depicted, like Double Sentinel, felt very appropriate to express this sense of dread, and potential loss of freedom. As we weathered the Covid storm and went on, I also understood that these industrial structures I am drawn to, function as metaphors for the process of human thought: taking in information, sorting and processing it - ”the conveyor belt of the human brain.”
And finally, with the frightening changes we are seeing in our government and in our ability to be compassionate, and to value art and love, I am seeing these “Towers” as harbingers of a new era where logic and the all-mighty dollar seem to be held most high. What is the end result of placing more value on money and power, than on the higher mind aspects that we are in fact capable of as a human race? These unfeeling, yet somehow human seeming structures are not saying….
